The Symptoms and Causes of Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease is a condition that affects the health and functions of the penis. It is triggered when there is a formation of plaque or scar tissue inside the penis. The disease affects the posture of the reproductive organ and one experiences painful erections due to its curving. Men with Peyronie’s disease may find it difficult to perform sex. It also leads to erectile dysfunction. The immense effects of the condition are recorded to further cause stress and anxiety among men.

The disease may heal on its own for some men. However, for most, it can worsen over time or stay stable. There is no proper understanding of what causes the condition. Albeit, there are some factors that are suspected to influence its development over time, and they include:

Repeated injury: The penis may be damaged during any activity. This could include injury at the time of sexual intercourse, athletic activities or any kind of accident. When the tissues begin to go through the healing process, the scar tissues may organize abnormally and there is a development of the nodule. There is no stretch in the part of the scar tissue thus causing curvature.

Genetics: A heredity trait can lead to the condition getting passed on. An individual who has relatives having the disease is more likely to develop the same.

Disorder in the connective tissue: The connective tissue disorder can cause Peyronie’s disease. While medical professionals are still trying to understand the connection, it is suspected that both the conditions have an interlink.

Other possible factors include aging, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and certain types of health conditions.

Symptoms of Peyronie’s disease
The symptoms or signs of the condition will develop over time or may come into notice suddenly.

The symptoms will drive the type of treatment employed and decide whether one must undergo a surgical procedure. Some of the most common signs of Peyronie’s disease include:

Feeling a scar tissue: This is typically the most common symptom. The scar tissue associated with the condition can be felt under the skin’s surface. Upon touching, it may feel like lumps or hardened tissue.

Problem with an erection: The person might face an issue with getting or maintaining an erection. This problem may have not been experienced in the past.

Pain and discomfort: Peyronie’s disease causes pain in the penis. Discomfort may be felt when experiencing an erection. The pain can persist even after sexual activity.

A curvature of the penis: The penis appears to be curved in either a downward or upward direction. One may also notice that it is abnormally bent on one side during all times. Some men may also find that their penis gets narrower and has an hourglass appearance. It may grow shorter in length too when affected by the disease.

It is essential to see the doctor immediately if any of the above-listed symptoms come into light. This will aid in getting timely treatment and prevent worsening of the condition.
